Quick Answer

Does Medicare or Medicaid pay for nurse call systems?

The short answer

A facility nurse-call project is not the same as a resident's equipment claim. Medicare skilled-nursing payments and Illinois Medicaid nursing-facility rates include capital-related elements, but those rules do not promise separate reimbursement for a particular system. Ask your reimbursement adviser how the proposed purchase or service contract fits your facility's payment and cost-reporting rules.

Where the money actually comes from

  • Medicare Part A SNF prospective per-diem payment includes routine, ancillary and capital-related costs, subject to stated exceptions; this does not establish separate payment or full recovery for a particular installation
  • Illinois HFS's FY2025 report describes nursing, capital and support rate components, with capital and support based on facility cost reports; it is not an asset-specific eligibility or future-rate decision
  • A resident's Medicare Part B DME claim has separate medical-necessity, home-use and supplier conditions; that benefit does not establish coverage of a facility installation or every personal alarm

The survey connection

For covered long-term-care facilities, CMS F919 addresses the ability to summon staff from beds and toilet or bathing facilities. Meeting that operational requirement and determining payment treatment are separate questions; a compliance need does not establish reimbursement eligibility or a financial return.

Have the facility's finance and reimbursement adviser evaluate the actual contract, ownership, financing and reporting treatment. A monthly invoice alone does not establish OpEx treatment, and no grant eligibility or award is established by this answer.
