What drives the cost of commercial video surveillance?
The short answer
Commercial surveillance cost depends on the views required, selected camera and recording platform, storage goals and installation conditions. Cabling, network capacity, access equipment, optional analytics and integration work should be identified separately. Include operator training and lifecycle service. Compare proposals using the same retention and image-use requirements rather than assuming a price per camera describes the whole project.

Expose the assumptions behind the total
Give each bidder the same location plan and recording objectives. Ask which existing components are assumed reusable and what evidence supports that assumption. Distinguish confirmed site work from allowances, especially exterior pathways, difficult mounting positions or work requiring coordination with other trades. No single cost category will dominate every project. Compare any proposed alternatives against the same approved operational requirements.

- Mounting, pathways, cabling, network and power provisions
- Software subscriptions, optional analytics and third-party connections
- Commissioning, documentation and incident-workflow training
- Preventive maintenance, support, replacement coverage and renewal costs
