Commercial Comparison

UniFi Protect vs. Cloud-Only Cameras

Compare local recording, remote access, retention, recurring fees, and operational ownership.

Plan your project

Map recording and WAN dependencies

Draw where each proposed system records video, where it stores copies, and how authorized users reach them. For the specified UniFi Protect and cloud-camera configurations, ask the supplier to demonstrate recording and retrieval during an internet interruption. Confirm any local buffering, upload, and recovery behavior for the exact equipment; the labels local and cloud do not answer every outage scenario.

Specify retention and usable evidence

Define the scenes, camera settings, retention period, simultaneous viewing needs, and incident-export workflow before comparing storage offers. Ask who can export footage, how access is removed, and how evidence is retrieved if an account or recorder is unavailable. Test a representative export with the people who handle incidents, including the format and supporting timestamps they actually need.

Compare storage and service obligations

Separate cameras, recording hardware, storage replacement, connectivity, subscriptions, and support in each proposal. Record any retention or feature limits and the process for retrieving recordings when service ends. Favor the configuration that meets the documented evidence workflow and outage requirements within the approved budget; do not assume that either deployment model eliminates recurring work or future replacement costs.
